Hosting a web page for a client

When we host a web page for a client, only information relating to the client’s products or services are displayed.

The design and content of ShowCasepage.net are not displayed at all.

The client’s page will be the “landing page” when a user clicks on a client’s ad who does not have an operational website yet.

Upgrading to WordPress 2.8.3

With the deprecation of WordPress 2.0.x, we thought we experiment upgrading our version of WordPress inside the dashboard instead of our usual route of upgrading with Fantastico in our server control panel.

After clicking the “Upgrade Automatically” button and entering our FTP details, we never expected the upgrade to finish at all. It was not as fast as upgrading using Fantastico.

If someone would ask us if we would upgrade our WordPress version inside the Dashboard, we would say, no. But we are glad we are now happily running the latest version of WordPress in our experimental site.

So far, we cannot find any much difference from version 2.7.1 at least in looks and feel. But as announced in the WordPress blog, the focus of WP 2.8.3 is more on security enhancements.

We will provide our comments on this latest version as we progress.

Testing Viper’s Video Quicktags

Below video was uploaded using Viper’s Video Quicktags plugin for WordPress.

The plugin’s “sales page” states: ‘Tired of copying and pasting the embed HTML from sites like YouTube? Then this plugin is for you.

Just simply click one of the new buttons that this plugin adds to the write screen (rich editor included) and then paste the URL that the video is located at into the prompt box — easy as that. You can fully configure how the videos are displayed (width, height, colors, alignment on the page) and much more. Your site will even stay (X)HTML valid unlike with the code provided by most video sites.’

Well, it delivers its promises. Great plugin.

You can download the plugin at the WordPress extension plugin directory.

What’s wrong with Alexa?

Traffic ranking of Showcasepage.net at Alexa 16 Jan 2009
The first page of this site was written last November 11 and as one would expect, the first page was actually an “About” page.

The only activity we have had so far in this site was to play around with some WordPress themes using a plugin called “Theme Test Drive” and experimented with WordPress plugins like Snazzy Archives and Syndication for prospective clients.

We activated the Syndication plugin to grab RSS feeds from other sites which we later deactivated and also “unpublished” the articles from our site.

Today, we noted that this site has an Alexa rating of 12,126,403 (see screenshot). Yes, only after 2 months and a few pages most of which were RSS feeds. Shouldn’t we be happy that this site achieved that ranking in only a short a time and with hardly any activity?

We don’t think so. We have other experimental sites which have not come close to this ranking. And some of the sites have been online for a while.

So what’s wrong with Alexa?

We don’t know yet. We have read elsewhere that the Alexa system is flawed. But without having a complete picture of how Alexa does its ranking, we cannot comment on those claims.

But the situation we have at this site certainly requires a closer look. Is there really something in this site that is attracting traffic? We don’t know yet. We will install additional metrices in our pages to monitor this situation and see if the Alexa rating is giving us reliable measurement.

Demo: Contact Form

Below is a contact form generated by Contact Form 7, a WordPress plugin by Takayuki Miyoshi.  The “sales page” of Contact Form 7 states it “can manage multiple contact forms, plus you can customize the form and the mail contents flexibly with simple markup. The form supports Ajax-powered submitting, CAPTCHA, Akismet spam filtering and so on.”

A couple of minutes is all you need to generate this form. Download plugin.

Free currency converters

When you’re operating an online shop, it pays, literally and figuratively, to have a currency converter installed on your site.

It does not matter whether your business caters only to local customers or to overseas market, these days a converter is a must. Consider especially that world currencies are volatile, and an information page with currency equivalents are important tools in the purchasing journey of your customers. Currency converters help provide answer price questions at that moment in time when your customers are ready to buy.

About 10 years ago when my company started emanila.com, there were only a handful of websites providing free currency converter service. One of them is which up to now, we are using in our . Like other currency converter services, XE rates are fed real-time. Design-wise, we did not have any issue at all. Once installed, we never touched it. XE automatically updates it using its live feed!

My other favourite online FX conversion service provider is Ozforex. I subscribed to its email service about three years and since then have received their daily (and sometimes twice a day) news and analysis on world currency market. Ozforex also provides an easy-to-install user interface.

Here is an of how an XE converter can be implemented in your pages taken straight from the XE interface. The converter can easily be customised to suit your preferences.
